Portraits of the Month/1997

Portrait of the Month/December 1997

My Family PortraitThis is the 11th consecutive year that my family has sent photo Christmas cards to our friends and relatives. The first one we ever sent was in 1987 and can be found elsewhere on this website. It's fun to look back on the others and see how we've changed.

This year my wife, son, and I spent an hour in the studio creating this formal portrait that we hope to hang in our foyer at home. I always enjoy the challenge each year of lighting and posing my wife and son, imagining how much room to leave for myself, setting the timer on the camera, dashing to position, and posing myself so that I don't look out of breathe. I'm pretty proud of this one. You don't need to see the others! Happy Holidays!

Brother/SisterSusannahJesse

Susannah and her brother, Jesse, sat for these studio portraits that are to be given to their grandmother for Christmas. Their mother, who wanted a timeless look in the portraits, selected classic syles of clothing. Not only do these portraits not date themselves, but the sober expressions serve to help portray the souls of the children. Grandma should be happy!

Portrait of the Month/October 1997

Girl With CurlEmily wanted a sexy, but tasteful, studio glamour portrait for the man in her life. She is posed in the classic "S" pose that flatters the female form. With the body facing to our right and the light coming from the left the shadows formed on the chest tend to exagerate and emphasize her cleavage. The face is turned back to the left to capture the light more fully, and the lock of hair covering her eye lends an element of intrigue. Black is a wonderful color for a woman to wear because dark colors recede from the eye, thus tending to make the subject's shoulders and waist appear to be more slim than had the subject worn a brighter or lighter color. A scoop neck or v-neck also will make a subject look taller and slimmer.

Portrait of the Month/September 1997

September 1997The Long family owns a beautiful beachfront summer home on the Atlantic Ocean in Bethany Beach, DE. This beautifully coordinated family portrait was made on the deck of that home in the cloudy bright afternoon light just minutes before a violent late summer thunderstorm. This portrait serves as the focal point over the fireplace in the great room of their beach home.

Portrait of the Month/August 1997

August 1997The Benjamin family of Salisbury, MD had their portrait created on the beach in Fenwick Island, DE near the end of the summer. The oldest son, pictured at the left, commissioned the portrait himself just prior to leaving home for his first semester at the University of Virginia. The family did a nice job in coordinating their clothing so that no one person dominated the portrait. By selecting classic styles of clothing the Benjamins ensure that their family wall portrait will serve as a wonderful home furnishing, expressing pride in their family, for many years to come.

Formal

Mid-summer marks the beginning of the high school senior portrait season. Students get excited about the year ahead and generally feel pretty good about themselves. It's a great time to get a jump on having portraits made at a time and place that is convenient to the student. The photographer can take plenty of time to create both formal and casual poses, providing a great selection from which to choose, and have the finished portraits completed in time to share with friends and family in September. Jenna, a member of the Class of 1998 at James M. Bennett High School in Salisbury, MD was this year's early bird!

Portrait of the Month/June 1997

June 1997Everybody has a story worthy of being told. Parents of small children have an intense desire to "hold on" to their kids because they grow up much too fast. "Baby Bear" is an interpretive portrait of one year old Lucas of Salisbury, MD that will do just that for his mother and father. The high key, white on white, technique of portraiture is an ideal way to focus on the innocence of small children. The classic teddy bear prop and the fact that the child wears only a diaper gives the portrait a timeless quality that any parent of any generation can appreciate. It's a classic story!

Portrait of the Month/May1997

May 1997Tige is a 23 year old graduate student working as a personal trainer. He holds a black belt degree and was in need of a portrait that displayed his self-confidence, self-control, and physique. A low key studio situation with strong lighting from the side and a classic masculine pose helps achieve that goal.
